Blackhawks to face a red hot Redcliffe

Wednesday, June 8, 2016

Currently sitting in third spot on the Intrust Super Cup ladder and averaging 28 points per match the Redcliffe Dolphins are in red hot form leading into the round 14 clash with the Townsville & Districts Mendi Blackhawks.

The Dolphins have conquered fellow top five contenders The Easts Tigers and the Burleigh Bears so far this season and only missed out by two points in a tight match against the Mendi Blackhawks back in Round 1.

Coach Kristian Woolf is certain it’s going to be a hard fought battle.

“This week will be a really good challenge against one of the strongest teams in the competition and gives us a real gauge of where we are at in this part of the season.”

“We learnt a lot from our our loss to Easts and improved on the weekend but will need to improve again this week against a team in good form off some big wins.”

“Our blokes will be looking forward to the challenge.”

The Mendi Blackhawks are still juggling their team list after a horror injury run to begin 2016. The team currently have 5 of their top 25 out with mid to long term injuries, in addition to injured Cowboys allocation Sam Hoare. Coach Woolf is hoping for a more consistent 17 in the back end of the season.

Kyle Laybutt is the latest addition to the Mendi Blackhawks injured list, ruled out after round 11 for six weeks with a scaphoid fracture in his wrist.

The Mendi Blackhawks will be glad to welcome back Matthew Bowen and Jahrome Hughes after they combined well in their first match together in Round 13. Playing alongside each other can only strengthen the combination which will no doubt prove a handful for opposition sides.

With a combined pack weight of over 600kgs the Dolphins are a big side that the Mendi Blackhawks will have to match physically. To go with their big pack, Redcliffe have threats on the edges with the likes of Broncos talents Jonus Pearson and Tom Opacic out wide and Darren Nicholls controlling the play.
