Blackhawks visit the 2015 Challenge Games

The Challenge Games is a wonderful two day carnival of fun, friendship and participation for school students with a disability. These activities include running, jumping, throwing and team events plus many other fun activities. The games are designed to be enjoyed as a fun, non-competitive event, but interested athletes can also use the challenge as an important step in their Paralympic journey.

This year the Townsville & Districts Mendi Blackhawks were delighted to be able to attend the Challenge Games and support this wonderful event alongside the North Queensland Cowboys, the Townsville Fire and the Townsville Crocodiles. Mendi Blackhawks Captain Daniel Beasley and Fullback Jahrome Hughes made their way to the Sports Reserve today to join in the fun. The players handed out ribbons to event participants, posed for photos and chatted to the students.

Beasley said the experience was a special one, “It was great to get down there and see every student out there participating.”

“It was extremely humbling to see how much the little things in life can mean to people. Their smiles were definitely contagious.”

The games provide an opportunity for children with physical or intellectual disabilities to participate in sports and meet other students. These students are not normally able to participate in regular school sport so this special events ensure that the students get a chance to enjoy sport and recreation no matter their ability.

A point that Hughes found especially important, “It was fantastic to see all the kids there with massive smiles on their faces because they were enjoying activities they wouldn’t normally be able to participate in. It was a great day.”
