This weekend is the Townsville & Districts Mendi Blackhawks 2017 Intrust Super Cup Indigenous Round, a time to celebrate, recognise and pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land we live on.

Prior to game Jeanette Wyles, a traditional owner from the Bindal people, will give a Welcome To Country at Jack Manski Oval.

“Every year we look forward to celebrating the Indigenous Round,” Coach Kristian Woolf said.

“We already have a long list of successful Indigenous Rugby League talent in only our first 3 years and we want this to continue and build.”

The Mendi Blackhawks will have 7 Indigenous players lining up this Sunday including, Anthony Mitchell, Jonathon Reuben, Carlin Anderson, Temone Power, Davin Crampton, Kierran Mosely and Kyle Laybutt as well as Ray Thompson and Tremayne Bowie in the squad.

Anthony Mitchell, who is an inaugural Mendi Blackhawks member, believes that the Indigenous Round is very important, especially now that he has a young son.

“It is always a great weekend and means a lot to my family and myself,” Mitchell said.

“I want to make sure that my son grows up knowing all about his Aboriginal culture.”

“We feel very honoured and proud to represent Townsville and the custodian owners of the land that we live and play on.”

Following the game supporters will have the opportunity to bid on the playing jerseys worn by the team.  All money raised will go towards developing Rugby League in North West Queensland.

The Reserve price is only $75.00 for each jersey and bids under the reserve will not be accepted. Bids will close at 5pm on Tuesday July 11, 2017.
