Round 20 of the Intrust Super Cup is ‘Country Week’, with “Get in the Game” the theme for the weekend.

Towns from regional Queensland including Bamaga, Clermont, Julia Creek, Mundubbera, St George and Winton will all host matches this weekend.

The Mendi Blackhawks head out to Winton’s, Eric Lenton Memorial Ground, to take on the Ipswich Jets this Saturday and there is an exciting full calendar of events planned.

Friday night will see the team visit the North Gregory Hotel from 7pm where locals will have a chance to meet and greet the players.

Football Operations Manager, Adrian ‘Happy’ Thomson, who will be making his return to his hometown, said the team is really looking forward to heading out west.

“It’s exciting for the town to be able to host an Intrust Super Cup game,” Thomson said, “the facilities are great for a western town.”

“The secretary of Winton Seniors Rugby League, Ros Lenton, has been fantastic in organising the team with things like bus transfers and meals.”

“Winton, like many regional towns, is a rich historical town,”

“It’s most famous for the first ever meeting of Qantas taking place there and the first time Waltzing Matilda was sung as a song was at the Gregory Hotel.”

“A highlight will be the visit to the Age of Dinosaurs on Sunday morning,”

“Both teams will definitely get a lot out of this trip, hopefully the majority of them will be supporting us.”

Gates open at 9am, with Junior teams U6’s through to U16’s, from Winton and Central West Rugby League, playing through until 2.15pm.

The curtain raiser will be a local blockbuster between the A grade Winton Devils and Ilfracombe Scorpions at 3.30pm.

The main game kicks off at 6pm with the Mendi Blackhawks taking on the Ipswich Jets.

The team will be playing in specially designed Winton Jerseys, which Thomson helped designed with Emu Sportswear, and a record number of these were pre-ordered.

If you missed out on ordering one of these jerseys, the players will be auctioning off the ones worn this Saturday night on the Mendi Blackhawks website.  Bidding opens this Friday and all profits will be returned to Winton Rugby League.

Entertainment by Townsville band “The Jamm” will be on after the game as well as full bar facilities and raffles.

Admission is just $5.00 for adults and Senior Pensioners & School kids are FREE.
