Sibling Rivalry in Round 1

Tuesday, March 3, 2015

The Townsville and Districts Mendi Blackhawks will be battling the Mackay Cutters at their home base of Jack Manski Oval this Saturday 7th March 2015 in the first round of the 2015 Intrust Super Cup. The action begins with preliminary games for Townsville Stingers taking on the Toowoomba Clydesdales in Cyril Connell Cup at 1:30pm and Mal Meninga Cup at 3:00pm.

Whilst the game may kick off a new rivalry between the Townsville and Mackay clubs, the game will provide a special type of rivalry for backrower Rhyse Martin as he will be taking to the field against his brother Tyson who has been named for the Mackay Cutters also at number 12. Whilst it is a good natured rivalry between the siblings, the winner will certainly receive bragging rights at the next Martin family gathering.

The main game will see local boy and former Cowboy Anthony Mitchell line up for the first time in a black and green jersey as he has been named at hooker for Round 1. Mitchell gained valuable game time playing in a trial match in Cairns for Townsville Brothers over the weekend. The Mendi Blackhawks have also named Cowboys speedsters Zac Santo and Kyle Feldt in the two wing positions.

Coach Kristian Woolf said that there is a buzz around the club as everyone prepares for the first game. “Everyone is excited to take to the field for the first competition game in the club’s history. The fact that we are part of history is not lost on our players and the coaching staff. We are looking forward to the opportunity to set the tone for the type of team and club we want to be.”

Former Cowboys Under 20’s player Daniel Beasley was named as the Mendi Blackhawks inaugural Captain at the Season Launch on Saturday night and is also looking forward to his opportunity to lead from the front. “I was surprised and honoured to be named Captain. It’s not something I take lightly. The playing group is full of strong leaders so it’s a huge privilege for me to be captain. I certainly plan to give it my all. I genuinely believe the group we have assembled as the ability to go a very long way in the competition.”

Tickets are available for purchase from Reception at Brothers Leagues Club now.
