Training up a storm in Charters Towers

On Friday 16th January 2015 the Townsville Mendi Blackhawks travelled to Charters Towers for a contact and skill training session. Despite a daunting bus journey through an intense storm, the team arrived unscathed and on schedule at Bill Lewis Oval, the home of the Charters Towers Miners Junior and Senior Rugby League Clubs.

The session was arranged as a part of the Mendi Blackhawks drive to develop mutually beneficial relationships with the local clubs in our footprint. The club is committed to supporting grassroots rugby league because this the lifeblood of any sport; this is the place where future Intrust Super Cup players will develop a love of the game. Strengthening these clubs will have significant flow on effects for both the Townsville Mendi Blackhawks and the Intrust Super Cup competition.

The contact and skills session was a genuine test for the boys as another storm hit just as the session began. Coach Kristian Woolf said “The team looked quite sharp in the wet conditions. It was a tough session and the conditions weren’t great so we were impressed with how the boys trained. I’m really happy with their progress at this stage.”

The club are grateful to the Charters Towers Miners and the Enterprise Hotel for their hospitality and look forward to more country training sessions in the future – perhaps minus the thunder and lightning next time!
